New Media Consulting Blog is Live!

in General

Well, its about time… The company that advises others on how to implement and make new media work, finally has an official blog. I know it’s a lame excuse, but we really have been too busy working on clients’ projects to get this up sooner.Internet

My name is Andre Pinkowski, and I’m the MD of New Media Consulting Group (abbreviated to NMCG for the sake of my RSI). I perform the majority of Project Management, Business Analysis, Digital Strategy (and even Coding) at NMCG.

Heard the old adage; “Jack of all trades”? That’s pretty much me in a nutshell (and yeah, I can hear you mentally appending “master of none” - but I prefer to go with the classical usage of the term ;-).

I’ve been involved in Internet and Mobile my entire professional career. Now I make a living by helping people turn this fast paced and exciting medium to their advantage.

Enough about me though. If for some crazy reason you want more info, check the LinkedIn profile.

Our other NMCG Consultants will also be joining me here, and their posts will expand the breadth and depth of new media we cover. All our consultants are highly successful professionals in their own right, and you will no doubt benefit greatly from their expertise.

Who is New Media Consulting Group?

NMCG is a virtual consulting firm headquartered  in Newcastle, Australia. One of the first virtual consulting firms in Australia, we provide flexible, specialised, and highly creative solutions for clients. The firm operates with a unique business model, which helps to attract top-of-the-line consultants who care about the products they build.

I plan to outline the business strategy we use at a later date, as it can be of great benefit to distributed startups.

This blog gives NMCG a platform to provide advice, tips, and ideas that complement our services. The blog is targeted not only at clients, but anyone interested in business applications of new media.

Go ahead and subscribe to this blog’s RSS feed, or you can follow me on Twitter for more frequent (but less comprehensive) updates.

So what’s all this about New Media?

The phrase “new media” is something of a very broad term, and I’ll be the first to admit that it is often overused. There are many definitions and interpretations, however I believe it can be summed up in just one line.

New Media is information driven technology that empowers you and me.

Things like this blog, Facebook, Twitter, etc; are all examples of user driven and social media. The catalyst for all these technologies being the mainstream adoption of the Internet, as it is humanity’s largest publishing platform. Any voice, no matter how small, can now be heard by those who care to listen. Conversely, organisations and interest groups are now finding out how much more effective, personable, and useful new media can be.

We are now getting our information when and how we want it. And as much as old media organisations like the RIAA, old school Radio Guys, and some Celebrities just don’t get it, things are not going back to the way they were before. It’s a brave new world.

I’ll be expanding further on where new media is headed, and what you can do about it, in my next post. Until then, I’d be very interested to hear your ideas of what new media means to you, and how you have benefited from it.

I’m working on some interesting projects at the moment for my client (large APS agency) moving the majority of their training delivery into a virtual environment (ala skype) and backing it up with wiki’s for courses content, dates etc and a facebookesque evaluation and forum system for users to comment on their experience, instructors, provide recommendations etc. And this is all completely internal.

I think New Media applies as much to the internal mechanisms of an organisation as much as it does to the larger web based community. A really classic example is IBM who are using Second Life to provide new employee orientation, globally. Employees log in from all over the world and some HR person in Sth America runs them through pay, benefits etc etc.

Your absolutely right Holmes; new media is not restricted to any particular sector, but is being actively applied throughout the IT industry.

IBM’s use of second life is really cool, and they’ve also recently partnered with LinkedIn to integrate the business social network with Lotus Notes [press release].

I think we are just beginning to touch on the possible applications of all this new technology. As Kevin Kelly mentioned in his recent TED talk, no one would have imagined the current state of the web 15 years ago.
